Survival of the Fittest race adds 35K distance in Squamish, B.C.

Ellie Greenwood finishes third in the 18K

The popular Survival of the Fittest trail race took place at Squamish on Saturday, with over 300 runners participating. Shaun Stephens-Whale was the winner of the new 35K distance, in 3:03:11. Mike Sidic was second (3:04:07) and Mike McMillan third (3:13:47).

The top three women completing the 35K distance were Flavie Pelletier in 4:11:35, Claire Johnstone in 4:13:16, and Wiebke Straub in 4:14:21.

In the 18K, Joan Gual Ruiz was first in 1:35:07, Curtis Jung second in 1:40:10, and Ellie Greenwood third overall in 1:43:04. The third male to finish was Robert Taylor, in 1:47:06. Among the women, Ellie Greenwood was first, Freya Orban second (1:55:23) and Gabby Napoleone third (1:55:44).

The 35K is a new distance for this race, which in the past has offered 18K and 13K distances. (Only 18K and 35K were run this year.)

This was the third race in the Coast Mountain Trail Series, the first two being Run Ridge Run (13K and 25K) in February and Cap Crusher (12K and 24K) in March.

SOTF consists of a loop starting at the scenic Quest University lands in Squamish, B.C. Starting with a long climb (1,050m in total), the trail passes a beautiful waterfall just a few kilometers in. The trail continues upward, with fantastic views of the Tantalus mountain range across the valley.

The next race in the Coast Mountain Trail Series is Buckin’ Hell (30K, 50K, 50K relay) on North Vancouver’s Mount Seymour on July 28.
