Tim Tollefson, Nicole Bitter take wins at Javelina Jundred
The fractured Ultra-Trail World Tour season continued in Arizona over the weekend with a 100-miler from the Aravaipa Running crew

Over the weekend, many of America’s best ultrarunners took to the trails in Arizona for the Javelina Jundred, an event that featured several race distances, including the hotly contested 100-miler. Tim Tollefson, the 2020 USATF 50-mile trail national champion, won the men’s race in dominant fashion, taking the lead from the start and never giving it up. On the women’s side, multiple-time Western States 100 top-10 finisher Nicole Bitter (who is married to 100-mile world record-holder Zach Bitter) grabbed the win with a patient and well-executed race, battling from behind to finish as the top woman and third runner overall.

Tollefson’s third straight
The Javelina Jundred was Tollefson’s first race since March, when he won the national 50-mile championships in California. Just a month before that, he won a 50K race, also in California. With his win in Arizona on Saturday, he has a perfect record for 2020, with three wins in three runs.

Tollefson led for the entire race, and by about halfway, he was almost a full hour in front of the next closest runner, and while eventual second-place finisher Nick Coury gained some time in the latter half of the race, Tollefson still won by more than 40 minutes, taking the win in 13:28:04. Coury had a strong run, finishing in 14:09:48, and Sean Van Horn rounded out the men’s podium, placing fifth overall in 16:01:10.

Bitter’s big win
Bitter had a phenomenal race. She was steady from start to finish, and she was never lower than third place among the women. She closed exceptionally well, at one point moving from 17 minutes behind first place to 11 minutes ahead in the span of just 16K. After she caught and passed Camille Herron (who had been leading for much of the run but ultimately dropped out), it was Bitter’s race to lose, and she didn’t falter. With about 40K left in the race, she had a lead of 20 minutes over second-place Darce Claus. By the end, her lead had doubled to 40 minutes, and Bitter crossed the finish line for a massive win. Claus finished in fourth overall in 15:58:45, grabbing the second spot in the women’s race, and Kalie Demerjian took the final spot on the women’s podium, finishing in 16:10:47.
