Big's Backyard Ultra is known as one of the toughest ultrarunning races. The 2018 event broke records, while demonstrating the power of the human spirit.

Fifty years ago, Laz Lake (Gary Cantrell) came up with the idea of Big’s Backyard Ultra. Held in Laz’s backyard in Bell Buckle, Tennessee, runners complete a 4.16667 loop every hour until one remains. The course is part trail and part road, and there is no mercy. On October 20, Johan Steene and Courtney Dauwalter broke male and female records in a competitive field.
