Trail, mountain, and ultrarunner Mira Rai spends hours in the hills of Nepal logging miles. But she doesn’t take it for granted. Coming from a country in which women do not have equal access to opportunities such as education, she is using her success as an athlete to make changes. After winning the prestigious Mont Blanc 90K and setting a new record, Rai used her prize money to create sustainable change in her home village. In 2016, while recovering from a ruptured ACL injury, Rai organized the first running race in her home village of Bhojpur, Nepal. The Nepalese woman also won the 2017 National Geographic People’s Choice Adventurer of the Year for breaking barriers to include more women in sport. Rai has begun to deconstruct these systemic gender inequalities in her country through trail and mountain running. Watch Salomon TVs film of the iconic Rai.
