Three-time Olympian Eric Gillis hops in as a pacer at St. FX Invitational

The three-time Olympian and 10th-place finisher from the 2016 Olympic men's marathon led the St. FX Invitational for much of the race encouraging his athletes to fast times

Three-time Olympian and St. FX University cross-country assistant coach Eric Gillis helped pace his team’s athletes at a home meet on Saturday.

Gillis, who is in his first season as an assistant coach at the Antigonish, N.S.-based university, finished 10th in the men’s marathon at the 2016 Olympics. He recently moved to Antigonish, where he attended university himself, from his longtime training grounds of Guelph, Ont.

St. FX’s Angus Rawling won the men’s 8K in 26:15 while Gillis finished a second back in 26:16. Alex Neuffer, who was in the hunt early on, finished third in 26:32 and second among U Sports-eligible athletes. Katie Robinson of Acadia University was the women’s 6K winner in 23:25. St. FX runners finished second through sixth after Robinson.

“Shout out to our assistant cross-country coach Eric Gillis for pacing our X-Men runners to top-three finishes alongside himself!” St. FX Athletics tweeted out. The 37-year-old is expected to take over head coaching duties after the 2017 campaign as current head coach Bernie Chisholm announced his retirement, to come into effect at the end of the academic year, this past summer.
