Chilly Half-Marathon

The New Balance Chilly Half-Marathon lived up to its name on Sunday morning in Burlington, Ont.

Runners experienced cool, though manageable, conditions, which made the post-race chili that much better. This year’s popular southern Ontario March tradition marked the 21st running of the event.

Krista DuChene, a 2016 Olympian who will run the 2017 London Marathon in April, won the Chilly Half-Marathon for the second time in three years. The 40-year-old, who recently made the switch to train with Guelph, Ont.-based Speed River Track Club, ran 1:14:55, which is a new Canadian W40 record. (Previous W40 record for the half-marathon was 1:14:58 by Danuta Bartoszek.) Last month, DuChene won the Re-Fridgee-Eighter 8-miler in the snow as she continues to build for her spring marathon. Kait Toohey was second Sunday in 1:18:46; Tanis Bolton was third in 1:20:18.

Speed River teammate Tristan Woodfine defended his 2016 Chilly title winning Sunday morning in 1:05:27. Woodfine handily improved his Chilly time taking more than two minutes off last year’s clocking of 1:08:03. Blair Morgan was second in 1:06:40 and Rejean Chiasson rounded out the podium in 1:07:34.

As many as 4,000 runners were expected to race in Burlington, located on the southwestern shores of Lake Ontario. Sergio Raez Villanueva (14:46) and Amanda McLeod (17:24), who also won the shorter of the race’s two primary distances in 2016, won the Frosty 5K. Links to results can be found at the bottom of this page.

Both races began at 10:05 a.m. local time in what is annually one of Canada’s largest winter races. As per tradition, a chili pepper greeted runners as they approached the finish line.
