94th Boxing Day 10 Miler a success

boxing day 10 milerIf any of you ever watched old-school Batman episodes, they end with the phrase “same bat-time, same bat-channel.” After its 94th annual race, the Hamilton Harrier’s could adopt a similar mantra with regards to the Boxing Day 10 Miler—“same race distance, same race date.”

10 miles, which transfers to roughly 16K, is not a very common race distance, despite being perfect for those graduating from a 10K to a half. This year, race participants experienced mild temperatures that are a rarity at this event. The course, which winds along the edge of Lake Ontario, is often windy and cold.

Sami Jibril won the 16K race with a time of 48:39. He was followed by noted Canadian marathoner, Rob Watson, who finished with a time of 49:02. For the women, Leslie Sexton won with a time of 56:02. She was followed by another notable Canadian marathoner, Krista Duchene, who finished with a time of 57:30.

The race, like always, has a very distinct feel—populated with people who love the sport of running enough to make it a part of their holiday celebrations. Organizers are looking forward to 2020, which will mark the Boxing Day 10 Miler’s 100th birthday.
