A Cause for Celebration: How fundraising groups are fuelling the growth in marathon race participation

Kevin Mackinnon explores the astounding growth of charity teams at major marathon races in Canada and around the world.

Joints in Motion

Since 1999, more than 4,900 Joints In Motion participants have raised over $29 million in support of The Arthritis Society’s mission to find a cure for arthritis. The Joints in Motion running programs provide athletes a 10-20-week personalized training program timed to ensure that team members are prepared for their designated event. Counselling covers such topics as injury prevention, nutrition for endurance athletes, footwear and successful fundraising strategies.

There are core destinations offered across the country, however, some provinces offer some additional options. For 2010, the main running destinations include:

– Vancouver, half-marathon and 5K in June 2010

– Athens, full marathon, 10K and 5K in October 2010

– Cayman Islands, full marathon in December 2010
