Adidas suing Under Armour over patent infringement

Adidas suing Under Armour over patent infringement.

Sportswear giant Adidas filed a lawsuit on Tuesday in the state of Delaware claiming competitor Under Armour infringed on their patents used in the miCoach fitness tracking system.

MiCoach, Adidas’ fitness tracking system, uses a sport watch, heart rate monitor and mobile app to track fitness statistics on-the-fly while users work out. The German company claims Under Armour knowingly copied the patents in their MapMyFitness app and other products.

Under Armour bought MapMyFitness, a Texas-based fitness app with 20 million registered users, in November of 2013 for $150 million, spurring questions about what the fitness apparel company had planned for the acquisition. Many assumed they were looking to make an entrance into the booming industry around digital fitness tracking that includes the popular Nike+ training app, as well other heart rate monitors and run-tracking programs.

According to Reuters, Adidas is seeking damages as well as a jury trial.
