Canadian Andre De Grasse made his outdoor 200m debut on Saturday winning the Sun Angel Classic hosted by Arizona State University in Tempe. The Puma-sponsored athlete ran 20.23 with a 0.5 metre per second tailwind, 0.16 seconds ahead of second-place finisher Devin Jenkins of Texas A&M.

The 21-year-old Toronto-born sprinter pulled away from the field over the final 50 metres, first glancing to his left and again to his right, to take the win out of lane five. His personal best in the event is 19.88, the Canadian record.

De Grasse was also part of the winning men’s 4x100m relay squad (38.40) alongside ALTIS teammate and Canadian Akeem Haynes.

De Grasse’s win comes a week after he opened his outdoor season at the Florida Relays in Gainesville with a victory in the men’s 100m. Aided by a 3.3 metre per second tailwind, De Grasse eclipsed the 10-second barrier with a clocking of 9.99 on April 1. A wind reading of 2.0 metres per second or more (tailwind) is not considered legal for record validation.

At the same meet in Florida, he anchored Canada to a world-leading time (38.11) and a meet record in the men’s 4x100m and also was part of the men’s 4x200m relay (1:19.20) that set an additional meet record.

He currently trains with ALTIS – formerly known as the World Athletics Centre – in Phoenix, a group he joined at the end of December. He was previously based in Los Angeles while attending the University of Southern California (USC).

The two-time Pan Am Games champion (100m, 200m) and two-time world championship bronze medallist (100m, 4x100m) won the 60m at the prestigious Millrose Games earlier in the year in New York City.

De Grasse has the Canadian Olympic standard in both the 100m and 200m and is one of the country’s most promising sprinters.

He was named Canadian Running‘s Trackie of the Year for 2015 (click for details).
