Black is the new… black?

There seems to be a lot of black in my running gear. Time to spruce it up!

Going through my running and workout clothes, I noticed they definitely have one thing in common: they’re all black and boring.

Sometimes it’s hard to get motivation to go running and our clothing can play an important role in getting us perked up. Wearing your favourite colours (for me, it’s purple) makes everything much more enjoyable, including exercise. For women, sometimes just painting our toenails can make a bad day better. (It’s a fact. My mom told me this when I was younger and it’s always worked.) Throwing on one of my favorite colours allows me to enjoy my run just a tad bit more. It makes me happier and it definitely gives that extra boost of motivation, even if it sounds silly. Just try it.

“Colours can dictate our mood,” so we choose a color for the mood we want to be in, suggests the Complete Book Of Colour in an article I found. So, often times I think we subconsciously choose a colour that either dictates our mood or we end up choosing a colour that will affect our mood without even noticing it.

So, where can I find clothes that can break the black wearing habit?

Looking at the lululemon website, all of the pants offered were black aside from coloured waistbands. A friend mentioned that Nike usually comes out with the best colour choices, and even though there are some colour options, black definitely rules.

Like most people I know, I prefer black pants. But when I’m struggling with motivation, I think it might help to get more creative with our running gear. We don’t dress in bland colours day to day, so why should we when we run? Especially with the winter blues looming in the coming months, we should make an extra effort to spruce up our jogs.

Sticking a stripe of color down the side, or even a dark grey or navy would do the trick. RoadRunnerSports.com offers a lot of colour choice for running bottoms.

Also, you can check out the various Pink Ribbon websites to get a dash of pink on your running gear to support breast cancer awareness. The Running Room has a really great selection of Pink Ribbon gear.

The Run: Swiftly Tech Long Sleeve is one of my personal running favorites for adding color to my outfit.
The Run: Swiftly Tech Long Sleeve from lululemon is one of my personal running favorites for adding color to my outfit.

Regardless of the colour of your bottoms, you can always spruce up your outfit with a really bright top or jacket. Or, even a cute headband or hat. In the winter, I wear colorful running gloves. Yes, running is not a fashion show, I understand that. But, don’t do it for other people, do it for yourself. The brighter the clothes, the brighter the mood.

Wearing a dash of colour always helps me not only feel fashionable, but more excited about my run in general. I enjoy wearing bright colors because they make me smile and hopefully someone else too.
