Boston Marathon finisher’s medals flood eBay

boston marathon ebay medalLast year, there was an uproar when finisher’s medals and other paraphilia from the Boston Marathon, which was devastated by the bombings at the finish line, appeared on eBay. One medal went for as much as $600. Some in the running community found the auctions distasteful, and certain sellers indicated that they would donate the proceeds from the sales to charity.

This year’s race was the hot ticket event in the running world. It’s no surprise that again many are trying to profit off the desire to own a piece of history.

As of Friday morning, there are multiple finisher’s medals up for grabs, with one poised to sell for well over $370. Sellers are clearing out all of their race kit goodies, auctioning off everything from the Sam Adams branded bottle opener to a Boston Marathon lanyard that each runner received for their “runner’s passport.”

Also up for auction is a 1904 finisher’s medal. The sterling silver piece has a starting bid of $15,000. Only 67 men ran the race, which was in just its eighth year. Only 40 actually finished the race, making the medal extremely rare. The seller did not indicate who the medal was awarded to originally.
