The 2014 Boston Marathon nearly doubled the charity dollars raised by participants compared to the previous year.

The marathon this year raised USD$38.4 million for charities, up from the $20 million raised in 2013, a year that saw two bombs detonated at the finish line of the marathon course, killing three and injuring many more.

The 2014 race saw 36,000 runners enter the race, a large jump from previous years, which contributed to the amount of money raised. Many of the runners who did not finish in 2013 also ran again in 2014 for a charity. Only the 1996 race, which marked the event’s centennial year, saw more runners.

“This year’s Boston Marathon was like no other that we have witnessed,” said BAA executive director Tom Grilk in a statement. “We worked in cooperation with the community, especially the eight cities and towns which comprise the Boston Marathon route and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, to accommodate as many participants as possible, and we were delighted that so many chose to channel their dedication and commitment towards fundraising for worthwhile causes.”

The race raised money for over 300 different charities and causes.

Registration for the 2015 race opens on Sept. 8 with a tired entry system based on entrance standards.
