Calgary Marathon changes course, moves to May

In a response to feedback from runners, the HSBC Calgary Marathon is shifting its race date to May 31 and revamping its courses.

In a response to feedback from runners, the HSBC Calgary Marathon (and its accompanying shorter races) is shifting its race date to May 31, in a move to avoid the congestion of the city’s Stampede Week in July. Race director Helen Kolodziejzyk says the new date will free up resources such as entertainers, police, equipment and hotels, so runners can enjoy the event without worrying having to compete with the Stampede.

The 45th edition of the event will also feature revamped race courses for all six races – the marathon, half-marathon, 10K, 4x10K team event and the new family 5K walk and run. The marathon course takes a scenic tour of Calgary, starting in Bridgeland, winding past the zoo, the Saddledown and down Red Mile (of Calgary Flames celebratory fame), along the river, past the university and back downtown.
