Canadian track athlete Hubert Chevrette-Bélisle dies at age 27

Athletics Canada announced his death earlier on Wednesday. The 400m hurdler had been serving in the Canadian Armed Forces at the time of his death. The cause has not yet been released

Athletics Canada has announced that Canadian track athlete, Hubert Chevrette-Bélisle, has died. 

The governing body of our sport posted about the 27-year-old’s death on Facebook on Wednesday afternoon. The statement (translated from French to English) is as follows: 

“Sad news coming to us this morning. We heard the news of the death of Hubert Chevrette-Bélisle. At the age of 27, Hubert was a longtime member of the Olympic Athletics Club and was at the Université Laval since his move to the Quebec region.

Hubert was still active as an athlete and took the seventh place in the 2016 Canadian championships at 400m hurdles. All our sympathies to his family, his first coach José Sant, as well as to the many friends he had in the Canadian athletics family.”

Chevrette-Bélisle was originally from Repentiany, Que. and was the captain of the 2nd Battalion of the Royal 22nd Regiment. He is listed on the track team roster of Cornell University from 2009 to 2010 and for the University of Ottawa from 2010 to 2013. 

He died on July 24 and is survived by his mother, Louise Bélisle (Richard St-Jean), his brother Renaud, Carl and Chloé St-Jean, his grandmothers Hortense Ducharme, Pierrette Laurin and Yolande and Roger St-Jean. Olympic sprinter Kimberly Hyacinthe is also included in the obituary as someone very close to him. The cause of death has not be stated, but according to reports he did not die on a military facility, and local police are investigating. His funeral is scheduled for Sunday.
