Canada to send two-person team to NACAC 10K Road Race Cup

Canada will be sending two athletes, one male and one female, to the NACAC 10K Road Race Cup in Puerto Rico in late February.

Canada will be sending one male and one female to the North American, Central American and Caribbean Athletic Association (NACAC) 10K Road Race Cup, Athletics Canada announced on Thursday.

“The NACAC 10K Road Race Cup at the World’s Best 10k is a promising opportunity to give some of Canada’s top road running / distance athletes valuable international racing experience,” Athletics Canada wrote in a press release.

The NACAC 10K Cup will be run during the World’s Best 10K, an IAAF Gold Label race, in San Juan, Puerto Rico on Feb. 28.

Canada will send the top 10K-ranked male and female from 2015 with the team being fully funded — Athletics Canada will provide airfare and the race will cover accommodation, local transport and meals.

As of Dec. 19, Eric Gillis (28:58) and Lanni Marchant (31:49) are the top-ranked athletes in 10K road racing, according to the Athletics Canada rankings. Kelly Wiebe (29:08) and Natasha Wodak (31:59) are second in line for selection.

All four of the previously listed performances were achieved at the Ottawa 10K in May, which also served as the Canadian 10K Road Race Championships.

The World’s Best 10K and the Ottawa 10K are two of only a handful of 10Ks certified as IAAF Gold Label races.
