Krista DuChene is the athlete who many Canadian running fans know as the country’s “Marathon Mom.” DuChene is giving us all a motivational boost as she talks about motherhood and training and how she gets them both right in a video timed perfectly for Mother’s Day.

“I became a mom before I got to this level of running,” she says. “With each kid that I had, I got faster with my marathon.”

She adds that there are many advantages to having her three kids and a supportive family. With her running, DuChene has come up against many obstacles. Two years ago, a fractured femur took her out of training. She now trains with a screw in her leg. “My first thought was ‘How am I going to care for my kids?’ not ‘How am I going to train?'” she says in the video.

More recently, DuChene ran the Around the Bay 30K and the Montreal Half-Marathon where she won. The 39-year-old mom ran 1:12:30 which was fast enough to prove her fitness for the upcoming Rio Olympics where she has run a qualifying time for the marathon. Watch her cross the finish line in the Athletics Canada video.
