Canadian Charles Philibert-Thiboutot has been added the Wanamaker mile, one of the world’s most historic and well-known events on the indoor track and field circuit.

The NYRR Wanamaker Mile is part of the Millrose Games, an indoor track and field meet held annually in New York City, with the indoor mile event first being held in 1926. The race is named after department store owner Rodman Wanamaker.

“It’s really an honour to be a part of this year’s Millrose Games and Wanamaker Mile,” said Philibert-Thiboutot on Twitter. “A dream come true.”

Between 1926 and 2012, the event was held in Madison Square Garden — multiple MSG locations have been built since its inception in 1879 — in Manhattan before being moved to the Armory.

In the early days of the event, Madison Square Garden would consistently sell out as fans packed the arena to watch some of the world’s best athletes.

The NYRR Wanamaker Mile will take place at 5:50 p.m. on Feb. 20, the final event of the Millrose Games.

Just one Canadian, Graham Hood in 1995, has ever won the event. Bernard Lagat is the Wanamaker Mile king having won eight titles over his illustrious career including six straight from 2005 to 2010.

Nathan Brannen broke the Canadian record for the men’s indoor mile at the 2014 Wanamaker Mile running 3:54.32 to finish fourth behind winner Will Leer. An American has won the Wanamaker Mile in all but one year since 2005.

Philibert-Thiboutot is coming off a terrific 2015 season where he set a personal best in the 1,500m clocking 3:34.23 in Monaco. He competed at the IAAF World Championships in Beijing last August.

The Quebec City native (pictured above, left) opened up his 2016 season last weekend at the University of Washington Invitational in Seattle running 7:55.23 for the 3,000m, good for third in his heat.
