The route for the 2014 Commonwealth Games marathon in Glasgow, Scotland, was announced today.

It will be a 21.1K loop that will be run twice. The race will start in the city’s Glasgow Green Park at the People’s Palace, move towards Central Station and east along the River Clyde, crossing over at the Clyde Arc bridge. The route circles the downtown area of Glasgow south of the river before criss-crossing back over the river two more times and taking the Kings Bridge into Glasgow Green to start the second lap.

The International Association of Athletics Federations is expected to certify the course closer to the start of the Games.

“We  really wanted to see how we could encompass all of Glasgow. The marathon really takes into consideration then south side of Glasgow and the River Clyde,” said David Grevemberg, Glasgow 2014 chief executive.

The marathon is expected to be an event that draws many spectators, as it is one of only three events that are free to the public. The other two free events are those that happen outside on the city’s streets, the road race and time trial cycling events.

The Commonwealth Games will be taking place between July 23-Aug. 3.
