Detroit Free Press Marathon sells out

A few half-marathon entries still available for the popular cross-border race.

The Detroit Marathon has sold out, with few spots still remaining in the half-marathon.

The marathon and half-marathon are both popular choices for Canadian runners, as the race actually crosses the international border between the Motor City and Windsor, Ont. over the Ambassador Bridge, then back via the tunnel. It is also one of the very few marathons that requires that runners carry a passport.

According to the Detroit Free Press, some spaces for the full marathon may become available between now and Wednesday, when registration formally closes. The marathon website will change from “sold out” to the number of entries available.

The Free Press Marathon has exploded in size in the last few years. This year it is expected that participation will top 20,000 runners and walkers in the various races.

The race is a Boston certified qualifier.

The marathon is also unique because of it’s use of the tunnel, which is the only mile long underwater stretch of any running race in the world.

Many Canadian runners have won the marathon, including Derek Nakluski, who won the race last year in 2:28:22.
