Fiona Benson was the champion of the women’s mile at the Flotrack Throwdown in Portland over the weekend. She won the mile in 4:25:79– a PB by 18 seconds.

This time is also the best women’s mile run so far in 2015. The B.C. runner says she enjoyed racing at the meet in a race packed with fast athletes. She was presented with a cheque for $1,000 shortly after her win. “That was not where I expected myself to be a year ago,” she said later in  an interview.

Benson has seen significant improvement since the spring setting several PBs and competing at a much higher level than she ever had before. Starting the season she ran a 2:08:54 800m. That she knocked down to under two minutes at the Portland Track Festival, a feat which only five other Canadians achieved. It seems Portland is bringing her luck!

While she didn’t submit the paperwork to compete at Pan Ams, she’s set to go to World Championships this year. For an interview with Benson after her win, see here.
