Former Canadian record holder James Irons passes away

James IronsFormer Canadian record holder and elite middle distance runner James Irons passed away on Saturday, Jan. 18.

Irons was born in Brampton, Ont., where he was raised and attended high school. He was a standout runner during his years of competition and continued to live an active lifestyle until having a massive stroke four weeks ago. He was still an active member of the running community in Owen Sound and around Ontario and was an original member of the Toronto Olympic Club since their formation in 1954.

As a juvenile and junior athlete Irons went undefeated between the half-mile and two-mile races. He went on to represent Canada at the 1962 British Empire Games and the 1963 Pan Am Games. That year he also ran a personal best in the mile of 4:01 at Toronto’s Varsity Stadium.

Irons was also an avid golfer and curler.

He is survived by his wife, Sheryl Irons, two children, Kevin Irons and Shannon Irons-Crocker, and two grandchildren.
