Galen Rupp, running his first ever marathon, and Meb Keflezighi, 40, running his 23rd marathon, took the top two spots at the U.S. Marathon Trials in Los Angeles on Saturday afternoon and qualified for the Olympics in Rio.
Jared Ward finished third and also qualified for the U.S. Olympic marathon team; Luke Puskedra was fourth.
“It was a bit of change running the marathon,” Rupp told NBC following the race adding that the 10,000m, marathon double is “definitely possible.”

Despite it being Rupp’s first ever marathon, he made a significant move around the 35K mark and never looked back as Keflezighi held on for the rest of the race. Keflezighi will be making his fourth Olympic team, 12 years after winning a silver medal in the marathon at the Athens Olympics.
