Jesse Owens film starring Canadian actor hits theatres today

The Jesse Owens biopic film "Race" starring Canadian Stephan James in a lead role hits theatres across Canada today.

The biographical sports film about Jesse Owens, entitled Race, hits theatres today and stars Canadian Stephan James as the main character. Race also has prominent roles played by Jason Sudeikis and Jeremy Irons.

The biopic film follows the story of the U.S. sprinter winning four gold medals at the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin during a time of widespread discrimination in his home country as well as in Germany.

Owens is played by 22-year-old James, a Toronto native. James played a role in the 2014 film Selma before starring in the recent track and field film.

Since its release, the film has earned a 72 per cent rating on Rotten Tomatoes, a website devoted to film reviews. Race is 134 minutes in length.

Much of the filming took place in Montreal while the Olympic Games portion of the movie was filmed in Germany at Berlin’s iconic Olympic Stadium.
