Kawauchi rushed to hospital after winning ultra

Yuki Kawauchi, the Japanese running phenom who holds down a day job, won his second-straight Okinoshima Ultramarathon on Sunday, but was later rushed to hospital.

According to an article on the Japan Running News website, Kawauchi was the defending champion at the ultra’s 50K division. He finished this year’s race in 2:57:28, albeit missing the course record of 2:51:45 he set in 2012.

After crossing the finish line, he appeared to be suffering from heat stroke, according to the website. He was rushed to the medical tent and taken to a local hospital and given oxygen.

Kawauchi is known in running circles for his consistently impressive performances in marathons. In 2013 alone, he has already completed at least five marathons. His marathon PB is 2:08:15. He also holds down a day job as a civil servant in Japan.
