Kooymans shatters masters Canadian record on the track

The 57-year-old took down the 5000m mark by a whopping 43 seconds at York's indoor track.

Jerry Kooymans negotiated 50 banked corners at the York University indoor track on Sunday en route to smashing an age group Canadian record in the 5000m.

The 57-year-old cruised through the masters indoor mini-meet in 16:44:30, good enough for third place in the race. His time sets the new benchmark for 55-59 year-olds by an impressive 43 seconds. The previous record had been held by New Brunswick’s Rob Jackson since 2011.

Kooymans went into the race confident that he would take down the record. “Having run 16:27 for a road 5K in September, I was confident I would break the record,” the Markham resident told his local paper, the Markham Economist & Sun.

Kooymans has a lifetime personal best in the 5000m of 13:59. He is widely considered one of the best masters runners in Canada.
