Leadville 100 to use lottery for 2015 entry

Leadville belt buckleWhen the Leadville Trail 100 Run started more than 30 years ago, just 45 runners dared line up at the start. This year, when registration opened up it sold out in a day.

According to the Denver Post, the race’s operator, Life Time Fitness, has decided to resolve the demand issue by instituting a lottery system. It will open Dec. 1 for next year’s event, which is set to take place on Aug, 22.

Much like the New York City Marathon’s lottery system, it will cost a one-time $15 fee to enter just to get a shot at a bib. The lottery will close on Dec. 31 and lottery winners will be selected in mid-January. The registration fee is US$315.

With more than 17,000 ft of ascending and descending over mountainous terrain at an average of about 10,000 ft of altitude, the Leadville 100 is among the most challenging and celebrated trail events in the world.

This year, Canadian Rob Krar won the race in 15:00, but more than half the field typically fails to complete the event in the 30-hour cut-off.
