36-year-old woman dies after finishing half-marathon in Pennsylvania
Lindsay Doherty, a mother of three, passed away after collapsing at the finish line of the Scranton Half-Marathon in Pennsylvania.
A 36-year-old woman died after collapsing at the finish line of the Scranton Half-Marathon in eastern Pennsylvania last Sunday. According to The Times Tribune, Lindsay Doherty was taken to the emergency room at Geisinger Community Medical Center where she later died. The autopsy, according to The Associated Press, showed that she died from “intra-abdominal bleeding caused by a hemorrhage.”
Doherty is survived by her husband of 10 years and three children. She completed the Scranton Half-Marathon in 2016 and raced in 2017 on an earlier occasion at the Shiver by the River Scranton. Per Doherty’s Athlinks profile, she was an active runner on the Pennsylvania road running circuit. She completed the 2017 Scranton Half-Marathon in 1:53:37 and was rushed into an ambulance and taken to the local ER.

People remembered Doherty as “a woman of boundless energy and passionate selflessness, someone with a broad, infectious smile and a relentless can-do spirit,” according to The Times-Tribune.
“The Scranton community is mourning the loss of Lindsay O’Rourke Doherty,” the Scranton Half-Marathon said in a statement on the event’s Facebook page. “A loving mother, wife, daughter, and friend; she was the heartbeat of her family. Her kindness and legacy will live forever in her three beautiful children. Our hearts go out to the O’Rourke and Doherty family.”
Doherty’s funeral was held on Friday morning in Scranton, located approximately four hours southeast of Niagara Falls.
