Bairu is going after the Canadian Olympic standard of 2:11:29 in Houston on Jan. 15, the day after the U.S. Olympic Trials. He’ll have many of his teammates from the Oregon Track Club on the course to cheer him on, as well as his own dedicated pacers. So far, two Canadians, Reid Coolsaet and Eric Gillis have achieved the Canadian standard.

Houston will be Bairu’s first marathon since the 2010 New York City race, where he dropped out around 33K. Bairu, who is sponsored by Nike, said he’s learned valuable lessons from the experience and he’s confident that the fueling issues have been addressed.
