French media is dubbing the London 2012 Olympics as “cursed” after several of those athletes who competed for podium positions have died.

As of now, a total of 18 athletes have died from different causes, some of whom were runners. One was Canadian Daundre Barnaby, as well as Belarusian sprinter Yuliya Balykina, who competed in the 100m and 4 x 100m at the Olympics and was murdered. A 28-year-old man has been charged for her death.

More recently, Australian Sarah Tait — a rower– died of cervical cancer.

About 10,568 athletes took part in the London 2012 Olympics so some are suggesting that 18 deaths in a four-year period isn’t a high number. French media however are calling the Olympics cursed. Likely that’s because two French athletes were confirmed dead last March.

Barnaby died on March 27, 2015 in St. Kitts. he was at a training camp with team mates when he was swept out into the ocean. Barnaby competed in the London 2012 Olympics, Pan Ams as well as the IAAF World Championships.
