Organizers for the Winterman marathon and half-marathon announced late on Saturday that extreme cold weather in Ottawa is forcing the two distance events to be cancelled.
The 3K, 5K and 10K, however, will still be run, according to Somersault Events, the organizers of the event in the nation’s capital.

The race announcement, which was posted on the event’s Facebook page, notes the following:
“The late decision to amend the original format has only unfolded in the last eight hours as we monitored the Environment Canada website which has indicated that the cold spell is not going to subside as originally thought.
The safety and concern of all participants, volunteers, staff, and spectators, is our primary concern.
The format of race day has been amended as follows:
— New start time is 11 a.m. (11:05 a.m. for the 3K)
— Winterman will now be a 3K, 5K, and 10K only
— Winterman marathoners and half-marathoners are now registered in the 10K.”
As the Ottawa Citizen reports, Winterlude, an annual festival in Ottawa during the winter, is still ongoing despite the frigid temperatures.
Temperatures reached – 46 C overnight (with wind chill) in Ottawa this weekend. Somersault organizers originally noted that “there are no refunds or event transfers” at the end of the Facebook update but have since announced that “anyone registered for the marathon will be receiving a full refund and people registered for the half marathon will get a 50% discount for next year’s event.”
