An Italian Runner who was reported missing after completing Sunday’s New York City Marathon was found in good condition by an off-duty New York Police Department officer on Tuesday, CBS News reports.

Gianclaudio Marengo, 30, had been missing since Sunday afternoon. The group of runners Marengo had been staying with reported him missing to the Italian Consulate, which relayed the information to the New York Police Department.

Mam Yam, the officer who spotted Marengo on the No. 2 southbound subway, found the Italian runner at 6:30 a.m. EST near Penn Station, the busiest station in North America, after seeing his photo in the newspaper. Yam corralled the non-English speaking Marengo off the train and confirmed his identity by showing him his picture from the newspaper.

San Patrignano, an Italian rehabilitation centre that treated Marengo for drug addiction, reported that Marengo got lost after losing directions to the Sleep Inn, the hotel where him and the Italian group were staying for the weekend.

According to the report, the group of runners Marengo was staying with have already returned to Italy. Marengo was brought to a local hospital for precautionary reasons.

The 30-year-old, who spent nearly 36 hours on the streets of Manhattan before presenting himself to the NYPD, is set to return home to Milan Malpensa on a direct flight in the near future with the help of San Patrignano athletic trainer Antonio Boschini.
