Molly Huddle pushes for the creation of a female runner emoji
A U.S. Olympian has pushed for the creation of a female runner emoji and makes a serious case considering Apple only includes a male runner.
When can we get a girl runner emoji? It’s hampering my communication?? #putaponytailonit #itstime #ispeakinemoji — Molly Huddle (@MollyHuddle) October 18, 2015
Apple’s recent iOS update features the addition of a number of emojis including a unicorn, a taco and a burrito but no female runner.
Fifty-seven per cent of running event finishers in the United States were female in 2013 and 2014 but Apple features a male runner instead.
U.S. Olympian Molly Huddle has taken to social media to push for the creation of a female runner emoji, and has been getting widespread community support.
Huddle and RóisÃn McGettigan-Dumas, an Irish Olympian and founder of Believe I Am, sent a custom emoji submission to Unicode Consortium, a non-profit organization that regulates coding in the United States.
Apple only releases updates a few times per year so we’ll see if Huddle’s actions are heard, a possibility if someone in the running world has a direct line to Apple CEO Tim Cook.Â
argument: that a female athtlete emoji is as important as a taco or unicorn ??thx @BelieveIAm and @mylesdumas! ???? pic.twitter.com/797FHF1eVP — Molly Huddle (@MollyHuddle) October 26, 2015
