Moscow may also be 2016 Olympic option

Following an announcement that London is being considered as an alternate 2016 Olympics host, reports quoting anonymous sources within the International Olympic Committee have emerged claiming that the Games could also be moved to Moscow, Russia. This comes following more official statements that the organization, if Rio is unprepared to host the events, is considering moving the location.

Doubts have been raised about the ability of Rio de Janeiro to host the Games, as the city has been struggling with infrastructure project completion and is allegedly very behind schedule on preparations, although similar worries have been raised before other Olympics in the past and they were still able to host the event.

Some in the IOC have gone on record saying that there is no truth to the claims, but that the possibility of moving the event to London is a real option. No decisions are anywhere near final, especially before the 2014 World Cup, which Rio will be hosting next month amid concerns over gang and drug violence.

The story was first reported in the London Evening Standard and the IOC has said there is “not a shred of truth” to the story.

If London is asked to host the Games it would make the city the first in history to hold two consecutive Summer Olympics.
