New global race has finish line that chases you

wings for life world runThe founder of Red Bull is changing up the idea of the race.

Dietrich Mateschitz and Heinz Kinigadner co-founded the Wings for Life research foundation, which is devoted to finding cures of spinal cord injuries, and are hosting the first World Run on May 4, 2014. Kinigadner’s son is a quadriplegic after being involved in a serious motocross accident.

The run is hoping to attract 150,000 runners globally and will be dispersed across 35 to 40 courses around the world. Runners around the world will depart on the run at 10:00 A.M. UTC. Thirty minutes later chase cars, acting as the finish line, will depart at 15K per hour in an attempt to chase down competitors. The runner to outlast the chase car longest wins the global race.

In a sense, rather than running to a finish line, racers are running away from it as it chases them.

There will be a branch of the race taking place in Saskatoon, Sask.

It’s noted that winners will probably have to run very long distances to win, as the 30 minute start time difference and relatively slow pace of the chase cars means even moderate paces will allow the runner to stay in the race for a long trek.
