New York City Marathon finisher’s medals allegedly stolen and sold on eBay

Image 37New York City Marathon officials are investigating the possible theft of 17 finisher’s medals after an eBay listing appeared online on Thursday, according to DNAinfo.

The New York Road Runners (NYRR), a running organization that organizes the TCS NYC Marathon, did not authorize the sale of the medals. Since finishers are the only ones to receive a medal, the NYRR cites its likely that the medals are stolen.

The eBay user “library419” sold 10 finishers medals for the equivalent of C$120 per medal with the items now being listed as sold out, according to the eBay page. The items are listed as “100% Authentic NYC 2015 New York City Marathon Finishers Medal.”

It’s not uncommon for participants to list finisher medals on eBay, but selling multiple raises a number of red flags, running coach Jonathon Cane told DNAinfo.

The user also sold “100% Authentic NYC 2015 New York City Half Marathon Finishers Medal” in early October.
