New York City Marathon lottery awards more bibs than previous years
About 5,000m more people won bibs to the New York City Marathon yesterday, Tuesday March 3, when the world’s largest marathon held the lottery for its 2015 race.
It total, 14,326 bibs were awarded in the lottery this year, compared with 9,170 in the 2014 race, and demand for the coveted entries continues to rise along with participation in road races. Last year, just over 77,000 people threw their name in the lottery. This year the number was over 80,000.

The number of lottery bibs awarded is up from previous years for two main reasons: firstly, the race removed the guaranteed entry for those who have applied and been denied three times this year. Last year about 7,000 runners were given bibs through that stream. Also, each year there are fewer people using their guaranteed entry from the 2012 cancellation of the race due to Hurricane Sandy.
The New York City Marathon will be held on Sunday, Nov. 1, in 2015.
