New York City Marathon gets even bigger

In 2011 it became the largest marathon in history with 47,340 finishers. This November though, the ING New York City Marathon could break another record. About 48,000 have signed up to run through the city on Nov. 3.

The 2012 NYC Marathon was cancelled at the last minute due to the damage caused by Hurricane Sandy. After the cancellation, organizers gave runners the option of accepting a full refund, or taking guaranteed entry to any of the next three NYC marathons —  but not before they pay up.

While guaranteed a spot to run, the 19,000 who chose this option still had to pay entry fees. For a U.S. resident, it costs $255 (U.S.). Any Canadian (or other non-U.S. resident) marathoner has to shell out $347.

In 2011, Craig McMillan was the first Canadian to reach the Central Park finish at 2:36:56. Paula Keating was the first Canadian woman finishing in 2:50:41.

Organizers have not yet released all of the details about this year’s race such as bag check, cheering zones, and entertainment.
