Coolsaet, Gillis, Watson to run Scotiabank Marathon

Guelph marathoners to target Canadian record and Olympic standard at Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon.

Three of the top four Canadian marathoners — all of them of Guelph’s Speed River Track Club — have announced that they will be running the 2011 Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon. Reid Coolsaet, Eric Gillis and Rob Watson will all be targeting the 2:11:29 qualifying standard for the London 2012 Olympics.

Coolsaet has already achieved that standard with his 2:11:23 clocking at last year’s Scotiabank Marathon. With that goal met, his eyes will likely be on the Canadian record of 2:10:09, which has stood for 36 years. Gillis, too, has suggested the national record as a goal.

These Guelph marathoners are among the strongest competitors that Canada has ever had in this event, and they represent a true Canadian renaissance after a long slump. To have them all together in the same race will be a treat for fans, and potentially a great day for Canadian marathoning.
