The River City Runners, a crew in Edmonton, broke through the $20,000 fundraising mark for their upcoming 24-hour treadmill challenge on Wednesday night. The event is raising money in support of Hope Mission’s Kids in Action campaign.

With the crw originally hoping to raise $10,000 before the Feb. 14 treadmill challenge, Flaman Fitness, the exercise equipment company supplying the treadmills, agreed to throw in an addition $5,000 when they reached their goal, making the total $15,000. After that, the money kept rolling in until it passed $20,000. Donations are still being accepted.

The treadmill challenge will see the run crew and 24 other runners face off on two treadmills for 24 hours straight. Each runner will run for one hour. In total, the group plans to run 500km, or about 10.4km per runner. One hour slots were open to those interested if they donated $125, but in the fundraising campaign the spots have sold out.

Though the hour-long slots of participate in the treadmill challenge are all sold, the group has two other events happening during the treadmill challenge. From 11 p.m. on Friday evening until midnight, the crew will host a yoga session. The following morning is a HIIT session.

Money raised is going to help pay for healthy snacks and running shoes for children participating in the Kids in Action 5K in the city on May 30. Those interested in donating can still do so here.
