Just 12 days after winning Olympic gold in the women’s 3,000m steeplechase, Ruth Jebet of Bahrain has added the world record to her list of accomplishments. At the Paris Diamond League on Saturday, the 19-year-old ran 8:52.78 to take six seconds off the previous record.

Entering today’s Diamond League, Jebet had gone under nine minutes twice this season. On both of those previous occasions, the previous world record of 8:58.81 was under threat. The 3,000m steeplechase involves hurdling four barriers and clearing a water pit on each lap.

Back in the pack, there were lots of personal bests, season bests and an area record. Genevieve Lacaze ran a new Australian record in the 3,000m steeplechase with a 9:14.28 clocking on Saturday.

Just after the women’s 3,000m steeplechase was set, Laura Muir set a British record in the women’s 1,500m running 3:55.22. That’s the fastest time run this year in the 1,500m, one of track’s most exciting events, and a meet record.

No Canadian runners were in action at the Diamond League in Paris. The Diamond League is an elite circuit for track and field with stops around the world each year. Placings at each of the Diamond League events score towards an overall, cumulative point total.
