Sage Watson finishes impressive 6th in her first global senior final
The Canadian had a breakthrough week at the IAAF World Championships in London
Sage Watson is having a breakthrough year in her young professional career.
In fact, technically, the Medicine Hat, Alta., native has only been a pro for about two months, after graduating from the University of Arizona in the spring. She was the NCAA division 1 champion in 2017 as well.
The 23 year old ran a strong race against the best in the world, holding on to sixth place out of eight competitors in the final. Watson ran extraordinarily well in London, showing she’s quickly developing into a medal threat for Canada in 2020. With a PB of 54.52, Watson is not far off the Canadian record of 54.39, set by Rosey Edeh at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta.
American Kori Carter upset her teammate Dalilah Muhammad for the gold medal. Muhammad, who’s run one of the fastest times in history in the event, settled for silver. Jamaica’s Ristananna Tracey took bronze.
