Shelley Doucet

Quispamsis, N.B.’s Shelley Doucet won gold in the women’s marathon at the Francophone Games on Sunday morning.

Doucet is representing Team Canada-New Brunswick at the 2017 Francophone Games, a sporting event held every four years featuring athletes from French-speaking nations. The women’s marathon was held early in the Games’ schedule in Abidjan, Ivory Coast with action continuing through until July 30.

The marathon course was a 5K out-and-back that runners completed multiple times in the Ivory Coast economic capital. The race featured a small field, two to be exact, and Doucet commented on Facebook before the race that she would likely make the podium if she finished. Her winning time was 2:51:14.

Doucet is expected to race at the WMRA Long Distance Mountain Running Championships in Premana, Italy on Aug. 6.
