Bolstered by the success of the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, a group in Surrey, B.C. is planning to launch the Surrey International World Music Marathon in 2012.

In an article in Surrey Now, Marisa Babic says the idea for the marathon, set for Sept. 30 next year, has been brewing for some time but it was the exhilaration of the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics and Surrey’s success in hosting an official celebration site that convinced organizers the city was ready.

The race will begin and finish in the plaza of Central City. It will also feature something called “cultural music miles.” Along each mile of the marathon route, visitors will be able to cheer on the runners while enjoying the art, music and food of the city’s culturally diverse citizenry.

Organizers are hoping for a minimum of 3,000 to 5,000 runners next year.
