Dibaba was the first woman ever to win Olympic gold in both the 5,000m and 10,000m (at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing), three years after doing the same thing at the World Championships. She successfully defended her 10,000m title at the London Olympics in 2012, as well as winning the distance at the 2007 and 2013 World Championships.

Dibaba holds the 5,000m world record (outdoors) at 14:11.15.

When Dibaba announced her pregnancy, she implied that she hoped to return to racing in 2020.
