Loudoun Valley High School’s Drew Hunter became just the second U.S. high school athlete to ever run under 4:00 in the mile (1,609 metres) indoors on Saturday breaking the long-standing record held by Alan Webb.
The senior at Loudon Valley, located in northwestern Virginia, ran 3:58.25 at the Armory Invitational in New York City on Saturday afternoon to break the previous record set in 2001. Webb ran 3:59.86 and held the record for 15 years.
“It’s amazing,” Hunter told the Washington Post on Saturday night. “I’m kind of at a loss for words for how I feel because there are so many people out there who work their tails off. And I work mine off, too, but it just makes it surreal when you do meet your goals and do something that people didn’t think was possible.”

Hunter finished seventh in the race behind the winner Chris O’Hare. No Canadians were in the field.
On a day when media is largely dominated by Super Bowl coverage, the annual gridiron football championship, Hunter made the front page of the sports section in the Washington Post, one of the most widely recognized newspapers in the United States.
The feat comes one week after Hunter set the U.S. high school record in the 3,000m at the Camel City Invitational in North Carolina running 7:59. No high school athlete, outdoors or indoors, has ever run faster over that distance.

Hunter will be attending the University of Oregon next year, historically known for producing great runners.
