Ultrarunner rescued on Mount Horne, B.C.

181389319A woman had to be rescued by a helicopter on Mount Horne, near Qualicum Beach, B.C. late on Saturday. The ultrarunner had  been out running all day when she got lost.

She had been well prepared before heading out for the day, bringing with her a flashlight, GPS, cell phone and letting her family know where she would be running. The young woman had planned and was tracking her route but when her device failed, she got off course reported the Times Colonist.

At around 11 p.m., the RCMP called about the missing runner. Rescue crews comprised of both The Canadian Armed Forces and Canadian Coastal Guard were in contact with her through her cell phone as they searched and at 12:10 a.m., the rescue helicopter arrived on the scene using night vision goggles to locate her.

She was found at a logging road right near the top of the mountain when a 46-metre line was dropped from the helicopter.

The woman was reported as being in great spirits though, grateful for being found and required no medical attention despite having been out in the cold all day.

“This young woman knew exactly what to do to signal to us her location. She stayed in an open area and effectively used her headlamp as a signalling device,” rescue officer Gavin Lee told the Times Colonist.

Those involved in the rescue said that her flashlight was a major help in finding her whereabouts and expressed the importance of knowing how to dress when running in the mountains.
