Weekend recap: Doping allegations and a female Death Race champ
German broadcaster makes allegations of rampant athletics doping
German broadcaster ARD and The Sunday Times aired a documentary claiming there has been rampant doping in the world of athletics, based on test results ranging back to the 2001 Edmonton world championships.
The story claims that over one third of medallists at world championships and the Olympics since then have been tainted by suspicious tests. The IAAF released a statement denying the claims, though the story will likely unfold further in the coming days.
Canadian’s perform well at Panamerican junior championships in Edmonton
Canada’s top junior-aged athletes represented the county on home soil over the weekend in Edmonton, including a gold medal in the women’s 3,000m steeplechase by London, Ont., athlete Charlotte Prouse.
Edmonton is becoming a hot spot of Canadian track and field meets, hosting the national championships, the TrackTown Classic and the Panamerican junior championships all in one month.
First female winner in Canadian Death Race
Alissa St Laurent outran the men over the weekend, becoming the first female to win the overall race at the Canadian Death Race. The Edmonton runner finished the 125K gruelling trail race in 13:53:34, nearly an hour and a half ahead of second finisher Graham Glennie, who ran 15:20:46.
“It was something I wanted, something I wanted to see happen,” St Laurent told CBC.
