Why fall should be a runner’s favourite season

As if you even need a reason to run in the fall. In this country, in September through to November, runners are spoiled with stunning routes no matter which province they live in. If you’re a runner looking for reasons to love running during fall, we’ll give you some. Here’s why this time of year is the best:

1. The temperature is the most comfortable. Not too hot and not too cold. That’s a rarity when it comes to running. In the winter, everything has to be covered three times over. In summer, we fret about hydration and avoiding heat exhaustion. To socialize after a run is to accept the layer of sweat-sodden T-shirts. That’s not the case in fall. The temperature is perfect!

2. Fall races keep things exciting. It’s not long until your goal race now. You may have signed up for a fun run to ease into the season or maybe you’re counting down the days to the marathon which you know you’re going to finally PB in. Either way, racing keeps things fun.

3. Running is a great way to enjoy fall colours. This is probably the most obvious reason. As runners, we like to get outside to experience our surroundings. Discovering new paths or parts of our city is always fun. In fall, we’re wowed by all the gorgeous colours while running.

4. It’s still bright during mornings and after work. We still have months before concerning ourselves with scheduling the run while it’s still bright. The evenings may not be as long but running after work or school is still an option.

5. Crisp mornings are perfect. Trying to get some peace before that big meeting or to set the tone for a quiet Saturday off? That’s what fall mornings are for. Somehow, early mornings seem more peaceful when the temperature drops a few degrees.

6. It’s an excuse to buy fall gear. Many look forward to this time of year because of the excitement around fall fashion. Great fall fashion finds exist in the world of running and fitness. When September rolls in and things start to feel fall-like, heading out to our favourite running stores is the perfect rest day activity.

7. Your favourite spots aren’t as crowded. You know how annoying crowded beaches can be. And you spent the summer dodging people on your favourite trail. They’ve all cleared out and you’re free to experience this wonder all on your own.

8. It’s not too hot to start in on a post-run tea or latte. You know cafes start to get a little fancy with their flavours right around now. After a chilly, scenic run, you and your running partner deserve to settle in to a nice, warm beverage.

9. You survived brutally hot summer training for a reason. Sometimes in the summer, workouts seem to not be worth it at all. Weather gets muggy and humid. The unbearable sun beating down and causing major burns is a sure way to kill motivation. You stuck through it though and now your race results are about to remind you why. There’s nothing as satisfying as a PB.

10. Cross-country season has arrived. This isn’t just an exciting time for high school and college students. Head over to a local meet to remember the days when you raced cross-country. There are plenty of runners who find their way into coaching by getting involved with a school team.

11. No need to layer up. Winter is not yet here so layering up with movement-constricting clothing is not yet necessary. Enjoy these bulk-free days!

12. It’s one of the best times to get creative in the kitchen post-run. Root vegetables are in season so go crazy with roasting your favourites or pureeing them into a nice, creamy soup. For post-run indulgences, why not grab a slice of apple pie?
