Fifteen-year-old Katelyn Tuohy of North Rockland High School in Thiells, New York, set a new high school mile record of 4:33.87 at the New Balance Outdoor Nationals in Greensboro, North Carolina yesterday, a record that had stood for 36 years.

Tuohy was more than 16 seconds ahead of runner-up Grace Connolly of Natick, Massachusetts in her third record-breaking performance on the track this year. (She has also set a new outdoor two-mile record of 9:51.29 and an indoor 5K record of 15:37.12.)

The previous mile record of 4:35.24 was set by Polly Plumer of Irvine, Califnornia back in 1982.

Mary Cain still holds the indoor mile record of 4:28.25, set in 2013.
